Padang, Indonesia – 26 October 2010
SurfAid staff member missing as Mentawai tsunami toll rises
SurfAid’s Tom Plummer and other assessment teams spent yesterday surveying the damage in villages along the tsunami affected areas of North Pagai and South Pagai.
Villages in the area have either been completely destroyed or suffered significant damage.
One of our Indonesian staff members from Pasapuat village, Pagai South is reported to be missing. The organization is intensifying its efforts to respond to the disaster and reports coming in from the field continue to tell a grim tale.
The village of Sabeugungung has been completely wiped out, with 50 dead and 150 missing presumed dead. Sikakap hospital is overflowing with over 200 people seeking assistance.
Late yesterday SurfAid sent out 1000 shelter kits, 500 building kits and 500 hygiene kits on the charter boat “Huey” which will head for Sikakap.
The charter boat, Barrenjoey, has delivered the first batch of blankets, tarpaulins, floormats, towels, 40 water containers, and rope to the village of Bosua. Captain John McGroder reported that in the village of Bosua 10 residents are dead, one is still missing, while 78 houses have been destroyed.
Assessments and emergency supply deliveries will continue today.
SurfAid CEO Andrew Judge met the Indonesian Vice President Bapak Boediono, and presented SurfAid’s response plan. SurfAid is liaising with Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB), the Indonesian disaster management authority, to provide whatever support and assistance is needed.

Dear friends, family and fellow surfers,
As you might have heard a large earthquake struck off the Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra at 10:pm last night 25OCT10 geberating a large Tsunami that blasted into the Archipelago. Tsunami reports are still coming in, but a number of boats are missing, and I can tell you that at least two surf charter boats have been destroyed. We are all very concerned about the disappearance of the Macaroni’s resort and of the many smaller villages that have been erased. It seems Sikikap has been particularly wounded.
We are in Padang and we have assembled a Last Mile Operations team, chartered a boat and will be setting sail immediately to the Southern region of the Mentawai, closest to the epicenter where the damage is the most horrendous. On board we will be carrying vital aid and medicine and will be capable of operating an on board clinic and of carrying out Emergency evacuation if necessary.
Of course, Donations are badly needed. At this point we are doing this on credit cards.

Today all eyes along the Gulf are turned nervously towards tropical depression Alex which just cleared the Yucatan after coming ashore yesterday there as a strong tropical storm with 65 mph. winds and torrential rains.
Now Gulf Coast residents from Mexico to Florida watch to see where it will go and how strong it will get.

GOVERNOR LINGLE ESTABLISHES HAWAI‘I SURFING RESERVES
Executive Order Recognizes Surfing’s Cultural, Historic and Sports Significance; Promotes Protection of World-Renowned Surf Spots
HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle today issued an executive order to establish surfing reserves at two of Hawai‘i’s most important and well-known surfing areas. The executive order “acknowledges the cultural, sports and historic significance of important surf sites in Hawai‘i,” and “raises public awareness about the importance of protecting, nourishing and developing Hawai‘i’s world famous surf sites.”

The Governor’s order establishes the Duke Kahanamoku Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks bounded by the Ala Wai and the Waikîkî War Memorial Natatorium, as well as the North Shore Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks from Ali‘i Beach in Hale‘iwa to Sunset Beach. Both surf reserves are located off the waters of O‘ahu.

“Hawai‘i has some of the most famous and beautiful surf sites in the world and its native sons, such as Senator Fred Hemmings, have deservedly gained international recognition in the sport of surfing,” said Governor Lingle. “I am pleased we can formally acknowledge the cultural, sports, and historic significance of surfing in Hawai‘i.”

The executive order does not provide any funding for the surfing reserves, but enables the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), which is statutorily responsible for managing all waters and coastal areas of the state, to receive donations that could be used for signs or markers that identify the surf reserves. In addition, under the executive order, DLNR may assist in promoting federal, state and county collaboration in identifying, nourishing and protecting Hawai‘i surfing reserves.

The idea to designate surfing reserves in Hawai‘i was first introduced during the 2010 session of the Hawai‘i State Legislature by Senator Fred Hemmings, a former World Surfing Champion. Sen. Hemmings’ bill was approved unanimously by the State Senate, but was recommitted by the House in the final hours of the last day of the session. Sen. Hemmings’ idea to establish surfing reserves in Hawai‘i was patterned after the National Surfing Reserves Australia program, which currently recognizes about a dozen iconic surfing sites throughout Australia because of their intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value.

“Hawai‘i is the genesis of surfing,” said Sen. Hemmings. “We must regain the cultural and sports leadership of the world of surfing, and surfing reserves is a step in that direction. I appreciate and thank Governor Lingle for establishing surfing reserves for Hawai‘i.”

New Book Celebrates Surfing in the Coastal Bend
Photographic History Chronicles Rich Culture of Texas Wave Riders

Covering a span of more than fifty years, a new book titled Surfing Corpus Christi and Port Aransas will be published on May 24, 2010. The book commemorates the rich culture of wave raiders in the Texas Coastal Bend region.
Tracing the sport’s Coastal Bend origins through more than 200 historical images, the new pictorial history is the first major book ever written about surfing in Texas.
Husband and wife author team Dan Parker and Michelle Christenson are longtime surfers and Port Aransas residents, and both have worked as curators of the Texas Surf Museum since the museum opened its doors in 2005. The authors drew on more than 50 sources of information and photos during their research, and believe they have preserved an important and fascinating part of local history. “We hope the book will promote a better understanding of Texas surfing -- something that's not well-understood by the surfing world at large, much less the general public,” Parker said.

Hawaiian Surf Reserve Bill Goes Down In Committee

There are two things one should never witness, goes the old saw; the making of sausage and the making of law.

Recently there occurred in the State of Hawaii a good example of the truth of this adage. The Hawaiian Surf Reserve bill was tabled in committee near the end of the legislative session thus effectively killing the bill.

This measure had no real concrete effect, it would simply recognize some of the iconic Hawaiian surf spots as being important sites in Hawaiian history and as important to tourism and the image of Hawaii around the world.

The bill was introduced into the state senate by Senator Fred Hemmings. Senator Hemmings has his place in surfing history as a noted big wave rider dating back into the 60's and as the World Championship winner in the 1968 World Contest held in Puerto Rico. Senator Hemmings is retiring from the state senate and this bill was to be his last legislative effort.

I first heard of this effort via an email from my friend Drew Kampion, former editor of Surfer and Wind Surf magazines, back in February and I thought it sounded like a great idea. I posted this information on my blog at that time, along with subsequent posts as things developed.

It turned out to be more of a fight than I could ever have imagined! I was among more than 40 people who testified in favor of the bill to the state legislature in person or via email and other correspondence (email for me.)

The bill cleared the state senate but eventually died an ignominious death in the final committee hearing. I really don't understand why this happened but it seems to be a result of purely ugly partisanship. Senator Hemmings is a Republican.

Anyone who knows me knows my politics are anything but Republican but I don't see how that should play a part in a bill honoring surfing and Hawaii's famed surf breaks.

Aloha Fred Hemmings and probably the best thing you could do now is to paddle out and catch a few waves!

Dear Friends,

I just received word of the effort, led by your State Senator Fred Hemmings, to preserve most of the famous surf breaks on Oahu as recognized and historical locations.
I applaud this idea and I urge you to fully support this plan.
If the wonderful state of Hawaii is known best for anything around the world it is its surf!
From the Beach Boys to Jan and Dean, Hawaiian surf has been celebrated in song, movies and on the pages of magazines for longer than I have been alive, which is now over 62 years!
I am a long time surfer, since 1965, I have done most of my surfing in my native Texas on the Gulf Coast, and I lived in California for many years. I have surfed the west coast from the far south of Mexico to Vancouver Island. Every where I surfed I have met surfers whose dream was to go to Hawaii and ride the waves of your islands. Many of my friends have made this trip which is a pilgrimage for surfers!
I am sure the lure of the surf and the sand has had a tremendous boost to your tourist business and has also influenced non surfing tourists wishing to get a look at these places and the surfers that ride the waves.
To think that some of your famous breaks such as Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, Pipeline, Haleiwa and others could be threatened by development screams of heresy most high to surfers and tourists!
In California Dana Point stands a mute testimony to what can befall a famous surf spot which is now lost forever. There have been and still are good breaks and beaches at risk here in Texas, Florida and other mainland spots.
Don’t let such things happen in Hawaii!

Tony Amos, famed local oceanographer, inspects dead whale, he said was it a baleen whale but was unsure of the exact species. Baleen whales as a class includes the great whales, such as the blue whale, finback, hump back and others..

Texas beach goers can breathe easier today. In yesterday's elections Proposition 9 carried with an overwhelming majority, showing that once again Texans don't want developers and craven politicians messing with Texas beaches!
The Texas chapters of the Surfrider Foundation were instrumental in getting out the vote and none more so than local chapter President Cliff Schlabach, my ole buddy!

Keep Texas Beaches Public

Can you imagine driving your family to the beach for summer vacation, only to find a high fence covered with “no trespassing” signs?
For Texans, the ability to go to any beach they choose seems natural. But that isn’t the case elsewhere.
Florida, California and nearly every other coastal state in the Union allow owners of beachfront property to exclude the public and permit public beach access only in a limited number of locations.
Our freedom to walk on any beach we choose is unique,and under constant threat. Developers,overpaid lawyers and even the Legislature fail to appreciate this freedom.
That’s why I urge you to vote yes on Proposition 9 on Nov. 3 and enshrine our right to our beaches in the Texas Constitution. With your help, we can forever recognize and protect Texans right to access their beach and add it to our Texas Bill of Rights so that it cannot be taken away.
This prescriptive right to access the beach is as old as Texas. Before statehood, when Texas was a republic, travelers regularly used the beach as a highway. In the days before roads, Texas’ long beaches served as an expressway for horses, stagecoach’s and even the mail.
This tradition of public use constitutes a common law right. Like so many common
law rights,this right faced legal challenges. It was eroded over the years as
development boomed along the Texas coast. By the 1950s,some beachfront property
owners were building fences all the way to the water to make their own private
beaches.
In 1959, the Texas Legislature passed the Texas Open Beaches Act to put this
common law into statute. Despite natural disasters,and no small amount of
controversy,the Texas Open Beaches Act has withstood the test of time and
continues to affirm the public’s free and unrestricted access to public beaches.
It has served Texas well for 50 years. It’s now time to enshrine this right in
our Texas Constitution.
Proposition 9 would elevate the freedom to access the beach to a lot of other
freedoms we depend on,like freedom of speech,freedom of worship and the right
to carry a firearm.
Just like those rights,Texans’ right to access public beaches should be protected in perpetuity. The Legislature will still have a say on how that right is managed, but the right itself will be preserved.
If you want to keep your summer vacations at the Texas beach, vote yes on proposition 9 and let’s send a signal that Texas beaches belong to all Texans.

My friend Cliff Schlabach sent this and I urge all who care about our beaches to vote yes on Proposition 9 in the election of November 3rd.

November 3, 2009: Proposition 9: A Historic Choice
Something is happening in Texas that just isn’t right. Investors from other states and national investment companies have been buying up beachfront property in Texas, and lately, they have been trying to change our laws. These foreign investors are putting pressure on Texas lawmakers to keep Texans and visitors from enjoying “their” beaches. If they succeed, our right to have free access to Texas beaches will be gone forever. We must not let that happen.
Public beach access is not just a personal right. It is an important part of our tourism industry, an important source of state-wide revenues, to make sure visitors can enjoy the beach.
A trip to the beach is a time-honored tradition in Texas, and a part of who we are. Countless Texans and tourists have enjoyed the experience of splashing in the warm surf, building a sandcastle, taking a romantic sunset stroll, or just digging their toes in the sand and gazing out on a limitless horizon. They come to Padre Island, Galveston Island, Mustang Island, South Padre Island or any of the other beautiful beaches in Texas. A day at the beach is a unique and precious experience. It is a part of our heritage, something we must preserve and hand down to our children, and our children’s children.
The Texas Open Beaches Act currently preserves our free right to gain access to the beach, but it is under attack by these investors, who want to make “their” beaches private and keep others off. Fortunately, some have fought back. The 2009 Legislature put Proposition 9 on the ballot for November 3. Proposition 9 would place a guarantee of public beach access right into the Texas Constitution. Now your help is needed to preserve this right.
The annual Election Day on November 3, will not be as big as the Presidential election last year. It is still a big day. Voters who go to the polls on November 3will have a chance to make history by voting FOR Proposition 9. Your vote is needed.
Texas beaches are our heritage. We have the chance to make a historic choice on November 3, to guarantee to the public the free right of beach access, right in our Constitution.
Don't let this unique opportunity slip away, it's very likely that this will be our one and only chance to change the Texas constitution to include beach access rights for everyone.
Early voting starts on Monday, October 19.

Red Tide Empties Local Beaches

It's a beautiful day today. We had a record high temperature of 95 degrees and there's not a cloud in the sky but local beaches remain nearly empty as a red tide algae bloom works its way along the coast from South Padre to Port Aransas.
I went to Padre Island today but left immediately because of eye irritation and foul air caused by the microbial toxin.
The news reports say it is not harmful to humans but it has been fatal to thousands of fish which are washing up on shore.

Below is an email sent me from Drew Kampion. There is much need in Indonesia because of the recent tragedy. Surfers from the world over go to Indonesia to enjoy the fabulous surf and beauty of the country. They need our help.

PADANG EARTHQUAKE RELIEF APPEAL
Thursday 1 October 2009
SurfAid has launched an Emergency Response Appeal to help the people of Padang who were hit by a huge earthquake (7.6 on the Richter scale) on Wednesday 30 September.
Our Program Director, Dr David Lange, narrowly escaped death as he fled the Ambacang Hotel, which then collapsed, killing many and trapping others.
Many buildings have been destroyed with people caught underneath the rubble. There is a report that schoolchildren are still trapped underneath three schools. One hospital is destroyed and another so badly damaged that staff are working in tents outside. Doctors used car headlights and torches to operate on the injured overnight.
Dr David Lange said: “People are trapped and screaming for help but they are below huge slabs which will take heavy equipment to move. I saw dozens of the biggest buildings collapsed in town, most of the damage is concentrated in the commercial centre market, which was fully packed.”

My long time friend Lucy with the surf board I made for her many years ago. It was a 5'4" twin fin. I rode it a few times as a knee board with my Churchill swim fins in good waves at Huntington Beach and Church's, just below Lower Trestles. It rode well!

On Nov. 3, 2009, there will be a state wide election here in Texas. Proposition #9 will be on the ballot. If you are a beach lover you will want to vote for proposition #9.
This is... "The constitutional amendment to protect he right of the public individually and collectively to access and use the public beaches bordering the seaward shore of the Gulf of Mexico."
Every year greedy developers and their politician allies scheme and plot to take over our local beaches. We have enjoyed some success in beating them but we must be ever vigilant because greed never dies. This amendment will go a long way to help in the battle to protect our beaches.
I am a proud member of the Surfrider Foundation and I would encourage people to join them and support their efforts to protect beaches.

It is hot today, as it was yesterday and the day before, and will be for the foreseeable future!
Corpus Christi has had 28 straight days with temperatures over 95 degrees and has had several days over 100 which is very unusual down here on the Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately Port Aransas and Padre Island is a bit cooler with a good sea breeze but it is still hot.
This has been a Tennessee Williams summer, as in "The Long Hot Summer!"

One Year Ago Today: Hurricane Dolly Strikes South Padre Island

On this day one year ago Hurricane Dolly hit South Padre Island causing widespread damage and flooding. Here in Corpus Christi, where I reside, we had tropical storm winds and heavy rain but nothing extreme.
Now one year later we could use some of that rain as the long drought continues here with record setting heat.

It has been very hot so far this summer. Of course it is expected to be hot but it has been hotter than...well, normal. We have had quite a few days over 100 here and weeks of over 95 degree days and our drought has continued with only a few rain showers in the area recently, that's it! No mas! Today's temp was 102 at the airport with a heat index of 112! Thank goodness it is quite a bit cooler near the water.
It seems to me that a temperature over 100 used to be a rarity here in Corpus Christi.

Hot And Sunny On North Padre Island

The whole length of the beach once looked like this. Now days the beaches and the island are suffering from too much development. The coastal barrier islands help protect the mainland from hurricanes and tropical storms. Overdevelopment speeds the erosion of the beaches, the dunes and the islands themselves.

It was hot today! A new record, 95 degrees F,for this date was set at the Corpus Christi airport where the official local weather info is recorded. It was much cooler here on the coast and it was a lovley day, with a nice breeze and clear, blue skies.

It has been a beautiful and pleasantly confortable day today!
Yesterday was hot and windy! Winds blew over 50 mph from the North West. The winds blew down power poles in Lagarto, a small town near here and sparked brush fires which burned down 30 homes and other buildings! We are having a drought and yesterday's high winds and unusually (for here) low humidity created extreme fire danger.
